A Nature-Paced Program for the Budding Musician

Many music education programs are self-paced, but when there isn’t a clear framework to play around in, it can leave even the most passionate musicians owning an instrument for years without ever mastering it.

Pacing yourself with 15 minutes a day in each Key, you can finish the Bloom Book in 90 days, or one season. This includes six days to take time off or play freely (or “noodle”) with the Keys you’ve been practicing.

The Bloom Book has 84 Keys, each a potential starting point. Pick one, cycle through the book four times, i.e. four seasons, and you’ll arrive at the end of the year as a proficient musician. You might take a season to practice Home Keys. In the next, you might focus on Steps or practice running the Course chord progressions. You could even take a whole year to practice chords in the various registers of your instrument. These are merely suggestions. Choose your own adventure!

How It Works

The point isn’t to practice the Key, it’s to play it, to make music from it, and let something come out that sound genuinely…you. The Bloom Book discourages rote repetition, and replaces it with a simple practice rhythm to deepen your learning:

• One mode per day: seven modes, seven days
• Four cycles per year: one per season, each building on the last
• Six rest days per season: sit back, free-play, and noodle your way into a flow state

With each pass through the material, you’ll hear things you didn’t catch the last time. And by the end of a full year, you’ll have a working relationship with every mood of your major and minor keys, and a body of work to show for it.

Think of it like a chord chart, but for composing. Your eyes stay on the music, not on a diagram across the table.

Each key contains three things:

• Home Key: where this Key lives and which keys and chords are compatible with it
• Steps: the notes that define the mood of that Key. Play them and you’re already making music.
• Course: the chord progression built from those same Steps. The harmonic world your melody lives in.

In the back pages of the Bloom Book, you’ll find the formulas for building the most commonly-used chords. Use the Steps you’ve been practicing to build chords, and run the Course using those chords.

Why the Bloom Book?

The idea behind the Bloom Book was born after talking to dozens of musicians: songwriters, music teachers, guitar players, trombone players, piano players, vocalists, drummers, and even a few strings players, all with years of experience. Their resounding message? Most musicians aren’t lacking and in creativity, talent or inspiration. They’re lacking a repeatable process that channels that creativity. They sit down to write, wait for an idea to arrive, and when it doesn’t—or when it does but crumbles halfway through—they chalk it up to a bad vibe, if not a bad day.

The Bloom Book was is over 4 years in the making, designed around a different premise: creativity isn’t a bus, and it doesn’t need to be waited on. Creativity needs a structured space it can move around in, constrain itself against, and find its own shape.

So, every time you sit down with the Bloom Book, you won’t be hoping something arrives on time. You’ll be cultivating the conditions for it to.
