Don’t Read Your Bible Every Day. Do this instead.

Here’s one reason why you don’t need to read your bible every day.

Now, stick with me for just a second I’ll tell you what I mean by that.

If you’re like me, social media apps like Instagram and Facebook probably pushes a lot of Christian content to you. And most of this content tells you that you do need to read your Bible every day.

Now I’m not saying that’s not true, but I am saying that reading your bible every day, or feeling like you need to just because you need to be constantly told what God’s will is for you, might be a sign that you’re not entirely confident what that is. You’re not living in the spirit. But Hebrews 6:1 tells us that once we learn the basic truths about God, we continue to mature in our faith by learning deeper truths about him.

Therefore leaving the teaching of the first principles of Christ, let’s press on to perfection—not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, of faith toward God, of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Hebrews 6:1-3

And as Christians, we are living in a spiritual realm, and we need to do just that! We need to learn God’s spirit, His Character. You see, His words, the translations we read, those have changed over time. Words have been revised and ededited itied and so much that we have, at times, lost the very essence of scripture. But it’s that very essence of God’s spirit that we need to commit ourselves to learning! And this introduces an important personality trait about God’s character, called his immutability.

The Immutability of God

This immutability means that his character doesn’t change. His spirit, his temperament, and His purpose for you and for humanity as a whole, that never changes. So, you might be hearing this for the first time, because this is a very sort of Eastern view of God. And I think it’s one that is much closer to how Jesus himself actually talked about the Father.

He didn’t say that you have to memorize the Torah (or the Talmud) to know who God is. But Jesus did say that all scripture points to Him.

You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.

John 5:39

And Jesus said that you have to live in the spirit of love, to know His character.

So, if you put yourself in this perpetual pretext of “what would Jesus do?” in any given situation, your Bible becomes a reference guide to how to live a good and noble life; you start to live in the spirit, rather than doing things strictly by the book.

How to Organize Your Prayer Time if you Struggle to Read Your Bible Every Day

But if that doesn’t work for you and you absolutely need a process to follow, try this one.

If you’re like me, you’re really good at committing to your morning prayer time. At least for a few days. Maybe a whole week! Then you start to slip back into your rebellious, selfish, unconscious ways.

And then you repent.

And you start all over again.

Here’s what you can do to avoid this cycle: Focus your efforts on growing the 9 Fruit of the Spirit

Abraham’s patience.
David’s joy.
Joseph’s kindness & self-control.
Jesus’ peace.

These Biblical characters provide some great examples for us. Study them. Learn from them. Identify the Fruit of the Spirit at work in their stories, and you’ll start to notice the Fruit more in your life as well.
