Dear Genre’s “Speak Your Mind” Becomes an Anthem of Authenticity

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

– Dr. Seuss

We’ve all said it: “This is going to sound crazy, but…” What follows is usually the kind of raw, unfiltered truth that builds connections—communication that creates energy and flow.

In their new song, “Speak Your Mind”, indie band Dear Genre may have set out to write a simple love song. But their fans heard something deeper. In the two-minute story, listeners found an anthem of authenticity—one that’s becoming greater than the band itself.

This isn’t surprising for Dear Genre’s audience. The band’s music is for “free spirits and everyone who appreciates the beauty of individuality,” says a spokesperson from The Wink! Annex, where the band regularly performs intimate sets. Fans have embraced “Speak Your Mind” as a declaration to speak truth without fear of judgment or the need for approval. It’s a call to “fly their freak flags freely,” as the band’s frontman and drummer put it—a call to be boldly authentic in public, just as we are in private. But how did fans get all that from a simple boy-meets-girl song? Let’s break it down.

Not Just Another Love Song

At its core, “Speak Your Mind” captures the power of the encounter between two forces—like a simple man and a cataclysmic woman. The song leaves listeners wondering: Will the man speak as boldly in all areas of his life as he did in this intimate exchange?

This isn’t just a love song. It’s a call to serve each other not because of who someone is or isn’t, but “despite” that. Speaking uncomfortable truths gives life deeper color. It’s not solipsism, but community. “Speak Your Mind” contests convention, redefines reality, and dares us to question cultural norms—and, perhaps, even conventional wisdom.

Community, Collaboration, and Creation

No matter where you come from, there is a community for every need, want, abnormality, and margin. But when all those communities meet in the public square, how do we decide whose moral code should set the status quo? When we voice our beliefs, we have two options: we either have to pick one and agree completely (which is quite impossible) or meet in the middle, picking the best parts of all codes, and see where they can be found within a codex of common grace.

That challenge requires communication, collaboration, and a whole lot of love and acceptance. What happens when we challenge others in a way that’s intended to inspire growth, progress, and, eventually, create something entirely new? What happens when a challenge creates the kind of tension and release that, in some ways, is an act of god (that is to say, creation)? Andre, the band’s drummer and front man said of his own lesson learned in speaking his mind:

I feel that the freedom I have gained through embracing my true self, and being unapologetically forward and transparent about the person I am has been an invaluable asset I’ve grown into. In hindsight, I wish I would have come to embrace the person I was made to be a long time ago. My hope for this song is that it may help others to come to that conclusion earlier than I did.

Conclusion

So, take a cue from Dear Genre’s song and speak your mind! Someone is always listening, and your words might inspire others to do the same. When we share our truths, we create ripples that can lead to real change—both personally and collectively. Speak up, and you just might help make the world a little brighter and more honest. This might sound crazy, but breaking the silence could be exactly what we all need.
